Location:

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean the islands of Cape Verde are situated like a natural stopover on the journey from one continent to the other.
Located about 500 kilometres off the coast of Senegal between 15°N and 17°N, the Cape Verde archipelago is a group of 10 islands and 5 islets of volcanic origin.
Their principle attraction lies in the strong contrast between the rocky terrain of six of the westernmost islands and the long sandy beaches of the other islands.

The islands have traditionally been classified according to their geographical relationship to the trade winds that reach the islands from the continent.  The “Windward” islands include São Antão, São Vincente, Santa Luzia (uninhabited), São Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista. The more southerly “Leeward” islands include Maio, Santiago, Fogo and Brava.

The sun shines all the year round and the air is freshened by cool sea breezes. Cape Verde has a dry, tropical climate – the average temperature is 28°C and the range of temperature fluctuations does not exceed 10°C.

Cape Verde has a surface area of 4,033 km2 and is one of the five so-called Macronesia Atlantic Archipelagos that also include the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands and the Selvagens.

Cape Verde’s highlights include its long beaches, a sea perfect for all types of water sports, as well as its breathtaking mountains, its top quality fish and seafood and its unique and very beautiful music. From a socio-political perspective, the islands are stable and free from conflict. Strongly influenced by the West, the vast majority of the population of Cape Verde is Roman Catholic.
