Education:  

Almost 70% of the country’s population is school-educated. Most of the ountry’s teachers have degrees from European or American universities. Between 1992 and 1995 the country’s total investment in education amounted to 2% of GDP.

Primary school consists of six years of education, four of which are compulsory. Secondary school begins at age 13, and is divided into two three-year courses: general and pre-university. Post secondary school it common to attend universities abroad.Cape Verde does have two schools (industrial and commercial) of higher education. In 1995, approximately 42% of females, and 45% of males were enrolled in secondary school. Although literacy rates have improved over the past two decades, the gender gap remains the same.  In 2004, 66% of females and 85% of males were literate.
